By India Today Web Desk: Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik wrote a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, thanking the likes of India captain Rohit Sharma and his mentor Abhishek Nayar while thanking Australia great Ricky Ponting for his message of appreciation in a widely-shared video for the International Cricket Council.

Dinesh Karthik was hailed for his incredible comeback as the Tamil Nadu batter pipped the likes of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samsaon among a few others to take the first-choice wicketkeeper’s slot in India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad. Karthik was not in the reckoning even at the start of 2022 and the wicketkeeper’s foray into commentary during India’s tour of England last year gave hints that Karthik’s international career was over.

However, after a stunning domestic white-ball season with Tamil Nadu and a path-breaking IPL 2022 season with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Karthik stormed back into the Indian T20I side for the first time since the 2019 World Cup. Ever since Karthik has made the most of his opportunities at the lower middle-order and has evolved into a reliable finishing option for Team India.

Notably, Ricky Ponting, in his video for the ICC, hailed Karthik as one of the best finishers going around in T20I cricket, adding that he was surprised to see the wicketkeeper-batter earn his place back in the highly-competitive Indian side.

“Thanks Ricky for these beautiful words, which means a hell of a lot to me. I’m hoping to spend some time in the near future with you,” Karthik wrote in his Instagram post.

Shedding light on the support he recieved from captain Rohit Sharma, Karthik wrorte: “For a man who went through all this, believed in me and always had time for me and showed me there is light at the end of the tunnel for that I’m ever grateful, that for me is.”

Karthik was also full of praise of his mentor Abhishek Nayar, with whom he has had multiple personal coaching sessions in the recent past. Notably, Nayar was also with the Kolkata Knight Riders when Karthik was leading the 2-time IPL champions.

“And to make all of this happen and actually keep believing in me and pushing me every day in my journey here and what a special person he is in my life,” he wrote of Nayar.

Karthik is all set to take the first-choice wicketkeeper’s role in the Indian XI ahead of Rishabh Pant when Rohit Sharma’s men open their T20 World Cup Super 12 campaign against Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday, October 23.

Karthik has scored 273 runs in 24 matches at a strike rate of over 150 in T20Is in 2022. Having spoken at length about his dreams to help India win a World Cup, Karthik will be stoked to represent India in Australia as the Asian giants look to end their 9-year-long wait for an ICC trophy.
